Under My Thumb – Rolling Stones

Posted in Rolling Stones by admin @ Aug 26, 2011

“Under My Thumb” has always been one of my favorite tunes by the Rolling Stones. Here’s a little history about the song…

“Under My Thumb” is a song written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards for The Rolling Stones. Its first appearance was as an album track on 1966′s Aftermath. Although it was never released as a single, it is one of the band’s more popular songs from the period, appearing frequently on best-of compilations.

It was during a performance of this song at the infamous 1969 Altamont Free Concert that the Hells Angels who were guarding the Stones stabbed Meredith Hunter to death, not “Sympathy for the Devil”, as popularly believed. The events appear in the Gimme Shelter movie.

“Under My Thumb” was featured prominently by the band on their 1981 USA Tour and 1982 European tour as the opening number at each concert. The Stones have played the song sporadically on subsequent tours in 1997-98 and 2006. – Wikipedia

The Living Years – Mike and The Mechanics

Posted in Carrack, Paul,Mike & the Mechanics by admin @ Jul 15, 2011

Most of us became familiar with Paul Carrack due to his one-hit-wonder recording of “How Long” when he was with Ace. After Ace broke up, he was with Roxy Music and Squeeze, as well as embarking on a solo career. IN ’85, Carrack joined Mike Rutherford (of Genesis) for one of his “side projects”…a band called “Mike & the Mechanics”. Here’s a music video clip of Mike & the Mechanics w/ Paul Carrack singing their hit “The Living Years”.

How You Like Me Now? – The Heavy

Posted in The Heavy by admin @ Jul 1, 2011

The Heavy has been around for a few years, but to be very honest…I haven’t been too familiar with their work until now. And, I like what I hear! Supposedly originating from Noid, England (but there is no such place) their background remains a bit mysterious. Nonetheless, their sound is very real. Here is a video clip of The Heavy plaing “How You Like Me Now” on the Letterman Show.

Would I Lie To You – The Eurythmics

Posted in Eurythmics,Lennox, Annie by admin @ Jun 9, 2011

Eurythmics are a British pop rock duo, formed in 1980, currently disbanded, but known to reunite from time to time. Consisting of members Annie Lennox and David A. Stewart (both previously in the bands The Catch and The Tourists), the duo released their first album in 1981 to little fanfare, but went on to achieve global success with their second album Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This), released in 1983. The title track was a worldwide hit, topping the chart in various countries including the U.S. Eurythmics went on to release a string of hit singles and albums before they split in 1990. By this time, Stewart had already embarked on a parallel music career and was also a sought-after record producer, while Lennox began a solo recording career in 1992 with her debut album Diva. After almost a decade apart, Eurythmics reformed in the late 1990s to record their ninth album, Peace which was released in late 1999. They reunited again in 2005 to release the single “I’ve Got a Life”, as part of a new Eurythmics compilation album, Ultimate Collection. – Wikipedia

It’s been awhile since we’ve posted a video from one of my favorite people…Willie Nelson. I’ve always liked Willie’s “outlaw” attitude. Here’s a great music video clip of Willie Nelson at his best, singing “Crazy”…

Posted in Tower of Power by admin @ May 22, 2011

Tower of Power is an American R&B, soul and funk based horn section and band, originating in Oakland, California, that has been performing for over 40 years. The Tower of Power horn section has gained renown as a separate entity to much critical acclaim. They have appeared on a goodly number of other artists’ recordings, including one of the most highly regarded early live albums: a performance with Little Feat in 1977, one of the three inaugural acts to perform at the newly-opened Rockpalast studios on the song, “Rocket in my Pocket”. Other performers supported by the Tower of Power horns include the Monkees, Santana, Elkie Brooks, Cat Stevens (on his Foreigner Suite), Elton John, Linda Lewis, John Lee Hooker, Rufus, Rod Stewart, Jefferson Starship, Mickey Hart, Heart, Huey Lewis and the News, Spyro Gyra, KMFDM, Lyle Lovett, Poison, Phish, Toto, Pharoahe Monch, Brothers Johnson, and Aerosmith, among many other acts. Their early song “So Very Hard To Go”, was featured in the soundtrack of the 2002 film City of God, as well as Will Ferrell’s Semi-Pro. – Wikipedia Here’s a music video of Tower of Power playing their hit song “You’re Still A Young Man”…
